Light rain and cloud predicted for the rest of Aintree meeting

Umbrellas and coats should be the main accessories on ladies' day with autumn-like weather set to continue for the reminder of the Randox Health Grand National meeting.

On a cool and cloudy first day, the ground on the Mildmay and hurdle courses was changed to soft, good to soft in places (from good to soft, soft in places) after the third race and there could be rain overnight.

Clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch said: "I've swapped the descriptions around on the Mildmay and hurdle courses after feedback from the jockeys. It feels like winter jumping ground.

"We might get some drizzly rain overnight and, with the forecast for more cloudy weather and light rain, I can't really see conditions changing much."

After the first race, jockeys Robbie Power and Sean Flanagan described the ground as soft, while Harry Skelton said: "It's on the slow side of good, a bit softer in the straight.

"The course is like a carpet – you wouldn't find a snooker table better than that."

The going on the National course, which will be used for the Randox Health Topham Handicap Chase on Friday, was described as soft after racing on Thursday.
