Last year's runaway Irish Derby winner Sovereign belatedly back for more

Rewind 12 months and Sovereign was shocking the racing world with a 33-1 victory in the Irish Derby. It is therefore rather fitting he returns to action on this exact evening.

We have not seen him since that six-length win over Anthony Van Dyck, when his relentless galloping style was too strong for his seven rivals, and we still do not know how good he actually is. The Group 3 Comer Group International Vintage Crop Stakes (7.45) might tell us more.

Aidan O'Brien said: "Sovereign seems in good form and we have been happy with him. In an ideal world we would have liked to start him off over a shorter trip but the way this season has been there just aren't the opportunities there.

"He will come on for his first run and is just about ready to start back."

Master Of Reality, beaten a whisker in the Melbourne Cup under Frankie Dettori before being demoted to fourth, is another high-profile stayer returning to action and his mark of 118 is identical to Sovereign. Joseph O'Brien is also represented by the smart Twilight Payment.

Joseph O'Brien said: "They're two solid horses. Twilight Payment ran great at Leopardstown the last day and was unlucky just to get nabbed. He should run his race again.

"Master Of Reality is having his first run of the season and has been training well so we're looking forward to getting started with him."

The Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Jumeirah Creekside Hotel Alleged Stakes (4.45) features only the O'Briens with Aidan's Sir Dragonet taking on a trio from Joseph's stable.

"Sir Dragonet seems in good form and ran well at Ascot. It's the same trip here and he seems to have come out of Ascot in good shape. We're happy with him," said Aidan O'Brien.

Joseph's team includes 2018 Irish Derby winner Latrobe, although Buckhurst is the mount of Wayne Lordan and the one punters prefer.

Joseph O'Brien said: "Buckhurst had a good first run at Navan and came out of the race well. It's a small field here and we're hoping for a good run from him. Latrobe is in good form at home and didn't run badly on his return over the course and distance and we're hoping he can run well. Numerian has a very good run under his belt and the small field won't be any trouble for him. He should have a good chance."
