Last call for John Leeper and Wordsworth to book their tickets to Epsom
It is never too late to emerge as a Derby contender. Thursday's Dante might have been the last of the main Classic trials, but two more hopefuls put their credentials to the test on Saturday, and next week's Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood was won by Khalifa Sat before he finished second in last year's Derby.
These regally bred middle-distance types can bloom at any moment and whether the two colts who race just over two hours apart do enough to earn their place at Epsom, the names bestowed upon them suggest there is an expectation they will take high order eventually.
John Leeper, by Frankel out of Snow Fairy, is named after the equally legendary John Dunlop and trained by his son Ed in the silks made famous by his dam, who herself did not emerge as an Oaks contender until the Height Of Fashion Stakes on the same card as the Cocked Hat. Leaving it late runs in the family.
