King Of Comedy attempts to leave Gosden smiling as Flat season draws to a close

With the Flat season winding down, there is still enough time to see another precocious John Gosden-trained two year-old in action in the form of King Of Comedy.

The son of Kingman, who will bid to make it two wins from two starts in the 7f British Stallions Studs EBF Novice Stakes at Redcar, created a strong impression on debut when striding clear in a novice contest at Sandown in July.

Although visually impressive, it is the form of the win that really stands out. In behind him that day was Group 1 Vertem Futurity runner-up Phoenix Of Spain and the Mark Johnston-trained Persian Moon, who finished third in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York.

Another impressive performance may see this lightly-raced colt enter calculations for the Classics next year.

Gifford hoping chaser can make amends

Nick Gifford has had two winners from only six runners over the past 14 days and will be hoping Canyouringmeback can keep his good run going in the Smith & Williamson Handicap Chase (3.15) at Exeter. The improving six-year-old was travelling sweetly for Leighton Aspell at Wincanton last month before the pair parted ways five fences from home.

"He was going very well last time until he fell, albeit he was probably still a mile from home," Gifford said.

"This is a much stronger race, there's no doubt about that, but he will love the ground. We've always had him down as an out and out galloper and we're all hopeful of a good run."

On the horse's two victories at Huntingdon, one in May and the other last month, Gifford added: "They were not great races but he did win them nicely, both were over two and a half miles which I think is an insufficient trip.

"We're going to learn an awful lot more about him but we're really excited."

McConnell aiming for Another One

John McConnell has his string in superb form and, fit from finishing a gallant second at Cheltenham just over a week ago, Go Another One turns out quickly and faces just four rivals in the at Fairyhouse.

Speaking about the gelding’s chances, McConnell said: “He ran well at Cheltenham and seems to have come out of that race okay. It's a valuable race so we said we'd have a go at it. The horses are running well so hopefully he can keep it up. He has his chance in a tight little race.”

Hanlon hoping to provide Blackmore with a winner

John 'Shark' Hanlon, one of the first trainers to identify the talents of Rachael Blackmore, is hopeful his Redwood Boy can provide the title contender with victory in the Ladies Handicap Chase (2.00) at Fairyhouse.

A winner over hurdles when trained by Joseph O'Brien, Redwood Boy has shown plenty of ability for Hanlon, most recently staying on for fifth in a handicap hurdle at Clonmel last week.

The handler said: "He had a run over hurdles the other day, just to get his confidence back, and he ran a lovely race keeping on for fifth. Hopefully he won’t be far away – I think he’ll take a bit of beating for Rachael.”

He added: “I’m surprised with how far Rachael has come, of course I am, because at the beginning everyone thought she was mad.

“But she has a great pair of hands and she’s a good girl. It’s great that Gigginstown are getting behind her as well. For her to have 50 winners at this stage of the season is unreal."
