Last year's analysis of the Fillies' Mile pointed out that there was a case of mistaken identity. This ostensible Oaks trial is bent far more towards speed than its reputation would have it.

The gods had their fun with that assessment. Mother Earth and Snowfall got mixed up pre-race and ran as one another, which was only discovered afterwards.

It took months for the true significance of the episode to become apparent. Mother Earth, who finished third (as Snowfall), won the 1,000 Guineas, while Snowfall (eighth) became a record-breaking Oaks winner.
