Inspiral a leading player but Gosdens have it all to do with titles on the line
As much as we would love to see John and Thady Gosden celebrating like Sergio Aguero after his title-winning goal for Manchester City in 2012, they have all but ruled out a late bid for the trainers' championship on Saturday.
The title race runs until the end of the season but given the relative riches on offer at Ascot, the results on British Champions Day should prove decisive in splitting Charlie Appleby and William Haggas, who trails last year's winner by less than £80,000 and is set to saddle unbeaten superstar Baaeed in the Group 1 Qipco Champion Stakes (4.00).
The Gosdens have a mountain to climb to catch the leading pair – they are a little more than £750,000 behind Haggas – but their record at Champions Day speaks for itself. They have a joint-record eight winners in the meeting's 11-year history, the same as Aidan O'Brien, and more success could have big permutations for the title.
