Some eyebrows were raised when Bjorn Nielsen announced his decision to keep Stradivarius in training as an eight-year-old and his presence has provided a major fillip to the staying division this season.

While Stradivarius failedgold to follow up his Yorkshire Cup success in May with victories at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood, he has played a significant part in two rousing finishes.

There are two questions for punters to ponder when examining his Lonsdale Cup claims. Is time finally catching up with Stradivarius? Or should the ageing champion have added one or even two more Group 1 successes in two of the division’s crown jewels?
