Haggas to walk the course before committing Sea Of Class to Prince of Wales's
William Haggas will walk the course on Wednesday morning to ascertain whether conditions will be suitable for star filly Sea Of Class, who is due to make her eagerly awaited seasonal reappearance in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Sea Of Class, who is second-favourite behind Magical, has not raced on ground any softer than good and Haggas is mindful of giving last season's Arc runner-up a testing race on her return.
Ascot received just 0.5mm of rain overnight into Wednesday and the going on the round course – over which the 1m2f Prince Of Wales's will be run – has dried slightly to soft, good to soft in places (from soft). It is good to soft on the straight course but further showers are forecast before the start of racing.
Speaking after Addeybb's victory in the Wolferton Stakes on Tuesday, Haggas said of Sea Of Class: "She's in terrific form and has done everything we wanted. I'm really not sure about the ground. I'll talk to Mrs Tsui [owner] in the morning and we won't make any hasty decisions tonight.
"We'll have a look at the track in morning and decide. I really want to run her but don't want to bottom her at this stage of the season. We just want to make the right decision by her."
The five-day festival opened on ground described as good on the straight course, and good, good to soft in places on the round course. However, the going was eased to soft all over prior to the final race on Tuesday after persistent rain brought 5mm.
Stickels said: "We're forecast another 4-8mm between now and the start of racing on Wednesday. The ground has taken it well and I expect we'll be racing on soft ground."
"We were expecting rain and it came. But the forecast looks improved for later in the week."
The possibility of testing ground has seen punters put their faith in strong stayer Waldgeist, a Group 1 winner on soft ground, in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes. He has been trimmed to 5-1 (from 11-2) to strike for trainer Andre Fabre.
