Great horses in great races over two magical days, it's Irish Champions Weekend

David Jennings sets the scene for a top-class weekend of action in Ireland

At the end of a traumatic week comes a crumb of comfort in the shape of Irish Champions Weekend, a momentary and most welcome diversion from all the anguish.

On Wednesday we said goodbye to the one-of-a-kind teenager Jack de Bromhead in an excruciating but beautiful funeral mass in Butlerstown. The next day, Queen Elizabeth II passed away, the United Kingdom's longest-reigning monarch who adored horseracing and was the world's most recognised, respected and revered supporter of our great sport.

She was, no doubt, a keen admirer of Irish Champions Weekend too, which is now into its ninth year.
