Gosden hoping that Speed is not blunted by further rain at York

Shutter Speed must overcome doubts about the ground if she is to become the shortest priced favourite to oblige in the last of the premier Oaks trials since 4-9 chance Ambergris landed the inaugural running in 1961.

John Gosden, who together with jockey Frankie Dettori is on a hat-trick in today's renewal after Star Of Seville (2015) and So Mi Dar a year ago, has long regarded Khaild Abdullah's unbeaten prospect as the diamond in a glittering array of three-year-old fillies at Clarehaven Stables for this season.

Not for nothing has the unbeaten three-year-old been mentioned in the same sentence as The Fugue, another daughter of Dansili who was an easy winner of this in 2012.

After her devastating return at Newbury last month, connections must have been anticipating a similar show until the rain arrived, and Gosden will walk the track before making a call on her participation. Although she did win her maiden at Yarmouth last October on a soft surface, it was quick ground at Newbury following which a crack at the French Oaks was mentioned.

Pleasing on the eye at the time, the form got a thumbs-up last week when third-placed Enable, also trained by Gosden, scooted home in the Cheshire Oaks. Kept mainly to the all-weather surfaces at home since Newbury, Shutter Speed may not be risked if her trainer deems the ground too testing.

Gosden has some way to surpass the record of nine wins in the race held by Sir Henry Cecil, but victory would put Dettori level with US legend Steve Cauthen on five victories.

Gosden said: "Our one concern would be about how much rain they're going to get at York. She won on soft at Yarmouth last year but it wouldn't be her favourite and they are forecast to get wet again on Wednesday morning.

"We'll send her up there and the intention is to run but we'll have a good look at the ground before racing. She's not bred for soft ground being by Dansili out of an Oasis Dream mare but hopefully she can run as if she doesn't run at York there's nowhere else to go.""

Of the four in opposition, Serenada could not be better bred for the job as she is a sister to Liber Nauticus who won this for Sir Michael Stoute in 2013

Winner of a Sandown maiden on her reappearance, Roger Varian's filly is ready to step up, and the trainer said: "Serenada showed a good attitude to win a competitive-looking Sandown maiden and I feel she's stepped forward since. The course will suit her and she won’t mind some ease in the ground – this will tell us a lot more about her.”

Also despatched from Newmarket is all-weather winner Vintage Folly, who has been absent for a while with good reason. Trainer Hugo Palmer explained: "We've been waiting for soft ground and it looks like we're finally going to get it. She always works well at home and hopefully she can get some black type."

Mark Johnston's outsider Miss Infinity completes the home defence but a bigger danger could come from Irish raider Vociferous Marina, conqueror of Lingfield Oaks Trial runner-up Pocketfullofdreams in a Listed contest at Naas last month.
