Coming up: Gosden double-handed in race named after old boss
3.45 AscotLondonMetric Noel Murless Stakes (Listed) | 1m6f | 3yo | RUK
John Gosden saddles two runners in a bid to repeat his one-two from two years ago in a staying contest named in memory of his old boss.
Gosden, who filled the first two places with Mill Springs and Secateur in 2015, fields Weekender, the mount of Frankie Dettori, and Zenon.
"We try to have a runner in this race which is named after my old boss," said the trainer.
Weekender is a relatively fresh horse having had a summer break before finishing second over a mile and a half at Newbury last month and, despite being a son of Frankel, he shaped as if this extra two furlongs should be within his range.
Stablemate Zenon has already tackled the trip having finished an unlucky second in a Yarmouth handicap last time.
No horse has ever won this race having previously run in the St Leger although Marzocco, who had finished fifth to Kingston Hill at Doncaster, was beaten a short head in 2014.
Raheen House, who was seventh behind Capri on Town Moor last month, attempts to break that sequence this time around.
What they say
Brian Meehan, trainer of Raheen House
He came out of the Leger well and is in good form. I'm confident of a good run.
Charlie Johnston, son of Mark, trainer of Hochfeld
We hope the ground dries out for him as his two poor runs have been on dreadful ground, most recently at Haydock. We were thinking about running him in the Old Rowley Cup at Newmarket but this looks too good an opportunity to miss.
Ralph Beckett, trainer of Mount Moriah
He'll like the ground and goes there in good shape. His best runs have been at Ascot so we are going there positive.
John Gosden, trainer of Weekender and Zenon
Weekender is an improving type and ran a nice race back from a break when second at Newbury and shapes as if this trip will be on his radar. Zenon is a strong staying type and was a bit unlucky not to win at Yarmouth last time.
