Newmarket will pay tribute to the man whose legacy is being celebrated this year after the 347th running of the race he founded this afternoon.

Charles II devised the Newmarket Town Plate, which was the first race run under rules and whose beginning in 1666 is the basis for the 350th anniversary of racing in the town which is being marked this season.

A statue of the King, whose enthusiasm for the sport did so much to make Newmarket the home of racing, will be unveiled in the parade ring after the presentation for this year's contest.
