Generation game: Sandown's star-studded Eclipse highlight of an absorbing day
A much-anticipated Coral-Eclipse (3.35), which features a classic head-to-head between French raider Vadeni, impressive winner of the Prix du Jockey Club, and Godolphin's Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Native Trail, threatens to raise the Sandown roof on Saturday.
First run in 1886 and named after a celebrated 18th century racehorse, the Eclipse has long fit snugly into its first Saturday in July slot between Royal Ascot and Newmarket’s July meeting, and never suffers from the clash with the Wimbledon tennis championships just over ten miles up the A3.
A standout event in its own right, with an illustrious roll of honour which includes the mighty Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Sea The Stars, Golden Horn and Enable, this year’s 1m2f showdown serves up another fascinating clash between the three-year-olds and the older generation.
