Frantic day as jet-setting Berry gets three bites at the cherry

Five rides at three different meetings will equal one long day for Fran Berry on Saturday.

The Lambourn-based jockey will fulfil a rare triple-header at Leicester, Doncaster and Wolverhampton, starting off in the 1.40 at Leicester before wrapping up nearly seven hours - and plenty of motorway miles - later in the 8.30 at Wolverhampton.

"I've somebody driving me so all I've got to worry about is studying the form and riding the horses," said Berry.

"It wasn't really planned, it's just the way things have fallen and looking at the timings of the races it should work out fine providing there are no mishaps on the road."

Following a quick stop-off at Ian Williams' Alvechurch stable on the outskirts of Birmingham in the morning to ride second lot, Berry starts proceedings at Leicester, partnering the David Evans-trained pair Letmestopyouthere (1.40) and Awake In Asia (2.15) in the opening two races.

"David has been very good to me and we had a good winter together, and his two have live chances particularly Awake In Asia, who finished second to a useful-looking Mark Johnston two-year-old on his debut at Windsor 12 days ago," said Berry.

The jockey will be the only person at Leicester heading for the exit as the runners go to post for the track's flagship race, the Listed totepool EBF Stallions King Richard III Stakes (2.45).

The £60,000 contest, which will be shown on ITV, should make for interesting viewing with dependable trio Jallota, Donjuan Triumphant and Kimberella clashing with lesser-exposed types Emmaus and Lahore.

It looks significant that Berry then takes a detour up to Doncaster for the middle leg of the journey to ride Colonel Frank in the opening mile handicap (5.10).

"He could be the pick of my rides as he handles dig in the ground and ran well from an unfavourable draw on his first run for Mick Quinn at the Lincoln meeting," he said.

Following on from there, at least Berry is heading roughly in the direction of home as he drops in at Wolverhampton to ride for trainer George Peckham for the first time on debutant Hoott (8.00), and the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Reine Des Miracles (8.30).

The Group 1-winning jockey, who has beeen riding as a freelance since parting ways with Ralph Beckett last summer, said: "I've been putting myself about over the winter and I'm glad to keep some supporters of mine happy by doing the three meetings."
