Those Brits at York this afternoon are under the rule of the country's second woman prime minister, Theresa May, while the most powerful leader in Europe is Germany's Angela Merkel. Across the Atlantic, Hillary Clinton is odds-on to become the first woman president of the United States.

The visiting women in Rio are also covering themselves in glory. One of the towering stars of Team GB has been brilliant track cyclist Laura Trott, while in the gymnastics arena America's Simone Biles has done things that beggar belief. Even tennis gold medallist Andy Murray claims to have become a feminist.
