The link between two of the most famous staying handicaps in the calendar is particularly strong this year, with no fewer than eight horses who competed - and largely competed well - in last year's Cesarewitch set to figure in the Chester Cup, with First Mohican bidding to go one better than at Newmarket.

The Alan King-trained horse finished runner-up to subsequent Group 3 scorer Sweet Selection at 50-1 and was a length and a quarter ahead of Sea Of Heaven, who in turn was followed home by The Cashel Man and Golden Spear.

For good measure Yorkidding was seventh, while Angel Gabrial (15th), Nakeeta (16th) and Fun Mac (20th) finished further back.

Going back a year, six horses who ran in the 2015 Cesarewitch competed in the following year's Chester Cup won by No Heretic, with Gabrial's King faring best with a fifth-placed finish at Chester.
