Fantastic beasts and where to find them – Exeter, of course
Paddock-watchers could be in for a big surprise at Exeter on Sunday, with the emphasis on the big.
The usual thoroughbreds will be joined by six Clydesdales, a breed of horse that can grow to be up to 18 hands high and weigh 1,000kg.
They are still used for draught purposes by breweries and as drum horses by the British Household Cavalry, but this half dozen will be taking part in the course's annual race for Dartmoor Clydesdales in aid of Devon Air Ambulance.
As preparation, Nick Scholfield recently donned a flight suit and hiked out over the foggy moors to put Salvo Montalbano through his paces.
"It was great fun and it’s all for a good cause," said the jockey. "The Devon Air Ambulance provides a vital service and it’s great that the Clydesdales come to Exeter on Devon Day to raise awareness and funds."
Scholfield has yet to win the race but said: "All the jockeys love taking part, and it puts a smile on our faces as we ride these wonderful horses down Exeter’s home straight.
"It’s a lovely day out for all the family, and the cheers from the crowds are fantastic."
Scholfield will be joined aboard the gentle giants by Tom Scudamore, Aidan Coleman, Bryony Frost, Lucy Gardner and Harry Cobden – who with his surname might be more at home on a smaller breed of horse!
