Emmet Mullins sends out talented duo for intriguing Grade 3 novice chase
Trainer Emmet Mullins fires some high-quality ammunition at Cork's seven-race card on Sunday, including promising youngsters Cape Gentleman and Noble Yeats in the Grade 3 Paddy Power From The Horses Mouth Podcast EBF Novice Chase (2.25).
There's a fair deal of depth to this 2m4f contest, including Gordon Elliott's leading National Hunt Chase fancy Run Wild Fred, who will be making his first start since finishing second in the Irish Grand National.
Diol Ker has yet to win over fences but made three chasing starts last season before reverting to hurdles, while 2018 Coral Cup winner Bleu Berry looked a decent recruit to this sphere when obliging at Listowel last month.
"Cape Gentleman was very good at Punchestown," said Mullins, who sent out The Shunter to finish fourth in the race last year. "He's going to learn plenty from this where he won't have things his own way."
Mullins added of Noble Yeats: "He beat a high-class horse in Gabynako at Galway when toughing it out well. I think he can go over further in time. The rain will have been in his favour."
French Dynamite, trained by Mouse Morris, makes his chasing debut after an excellent fourth in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown last season.
"We're hoping he puts in a good round of jumping for his first start," said Morris. "It was a great run at Punchestown. He's a nice horse."
Elliott said of Run Wild Fred: "He's in good nick. Probably a bit further would suit but we're happy with him."
Lorna Fowler is looking forward to saddling classy mare Politesse, who won on her chasing bow at Punchestown in May.
"It's a very hot race but she's in great form and we'll find out about where we stand with her," said Fowler.
Mullins also supplies the topweight in the 3m4f Paddy Power Cork Grand National Handicap Chase (3.00), stepping recent Fairyhouse beginners' chase winner Russian Diamond up in class and trip.
"He's on the up and jumped well last time," said the trainer. "I think this handicap experience will stand him in good stead for the rest of the season."
A week on from Ballywilliam Boy's ready Galway win, Michael Hourigan is hoping his progressive hurdler can follow up in the Listed Paddy's Rewards Club EBF Novice Hurdle (1.50).
"Going three miles would have to be a bit of a concern on the ground but this race suits him," said Hourigan. "He didn't have too hard a time of things last time and his form is working out well."
