Dante day is back where it belongs - and the locals could be loving it

It is time to celebrate one colt who lit up Britain as it emerged from a long period of darkness and possibly unearth another who could do the same.

Just weeks after VE Day in 1945, the hugely popular Dante brought joy to Middleham and punters nationwide by landing the wartime Derby at Newmarket, the first winning favourite since hostilities broke out.

With better luck he might have been a Triple Crown winner as he allowed the winner first run when beaten just a neck in the 2,000 Guineas and was odds-on for the St Leger when forced into retirement by a setback just weeks beforehand.
