Conditions lead to host of non-runners on day three
The testing going and conditions at Goodwood have led to a host of non-runners today, with 23 already withdrawn because of the going, officially described as soft, heavy in places.
Clerk of the course Seamus Buckley described yesterday's rain as the worst he had seen in his 23 years at the track and it amounted to 49.2mm.
A dry and windy day is forecast today, but the damage is done and Buckley amended conditions to soft, heavy in places (from soft) this morning. The GoingStick reads 5.8.
That means fields for the third day of the Glorious meeting - which features the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes (3.35) as its highlight - have been hit.
Assistant clerk of the course Ed Arkell said: "It's a shame we have so many non-runners, but it's inevitable, as they declared on good ground. It will be hard work for them, as they are also running into the wind, and we could be unlucky and catch the odd shower again later on, but all in all we are not in bad shape."
