Charlie Appleby reveals the secret behind Pinatubo's brilliance
It will take a little more than a minute and a half to decide the Qipco 2,000 Guineas and, even on the arrow-straight Rowley Mile, it is easy for a jockey to end up in the wrong spot at the crucial moment.
Red-hot favourite Pinatubo has crucial course experience from last season's Dewhurst, a race that may have been far from his most visually impressive but once again displayed the son of Shamardal's relentless power.
They can get racing very early at Newmarket and Charlie Appleby believes it is Pinatubo's ability to maintain the high revs for a prolonged period that will give William Buick the confidence to kick at whatever he feels is the right moment.
"We hope that's a nice draw in seven, which will give options, but more importantly it’s the horse underneath him that will hopefully allow them to go where they need to be in the race," said Appleby.
"He's not a keen horse. He'll pop away and hopefully William will be able to park him up in the position he wants.
"The encouraging part from last year is that, when he quickens, it isn't a burst that then stops, he's really able to maintain it, just keep going through it. You don’t see that very often."
