Nine years ago Pevensey was trained by John Quinn and won the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot under Graham Gibbons off a mark of 90. Today he lines up in an amateur riders' handicap at Beverley for Jacqueline Coward as a 14-year-old rated 60.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since that royal meeting success. Pevensey, who has not run on the Flat under rules for more than five years - 1,859 days to be exact - has spent the last three seasons point-to-pointing and earned his chance today in dubious circumstances.
