Candy hopeful Limato experiment over minimum trip will pay off

Basking in the glow of an authoritative victory in the July Cup at Newmarket last month, Henry Candy surprised those in attendance when suggesting the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood could be an option for his stable star Limato.

The four-year-old had already tried extending his stamina to a mile when fourth in the Lockinge earlier in the season and, while that plan was scrapped, another was hatched with the four-year-old set to drop back in trip to the minimum distance for the first time here.

Owner Paul Jacobs has refused seven-figure offers for Limato, and parted with the £30,000 supplementary fee for the Nunthorpe, which will look like money very well spent if he claims the £236,622 first prize.
