The Paddy Power Gold Cup is a race with two identities. The popular imagination of the race is as jumping's Free Handicap or London Gold Cup, an inexhaustible mine of championship performers.
While that is not wrong, it requires a selective memory. For every Al Ferof or Imperial Commander, there has been a Splash Of Ginge or an Annacotty. Last year's winner Happy Diva is a smart mare and as likeable as they come, but she will never be a champion and that was known even before she won last year.
