Betting editor Keith Melrose dissects a cracker of a Sussex Stakes

Teddy Grimthorpe on Siskin: 'We will find out if he stays a mile and, generally, we are quite positive about that. Why wouldn't we be?'

The Eclipse was closed off to three-year-olds this year, robbing fans of the usual first flashpoint between three-year-olds and older horses. It was a logical decision in the circumstances, but left us without an obvious alternative crossroads. That role has finally been claimed by the Sussex Stakes.

The first two from both the 2,000 Guineas and Irish equivalent, plus the Queen Anne and Summer Mile winner make this field as representative of the division as anyone could wish for. Only Godolphin, who might have run Pinatubo, Earthlight or Victor Ludorum, are missing from the party.
