On the day we drool over a delicious duel in the Champion Chase and get another glimpse of the most exciting novice in training, why is it that a twiggy thoroughbred running in the quirkiest race of the entire week will get the most rousing reception of all should he oblige?

It is simple really. It is because the twiggy thoroughbred in question goes by the name Tiger Roll and, right now, he is the most famous racehorse around thanks to his two Grand National wins. He is not much to look at, more David Jennings than David Beckham, but he has an innate ability to make us smile every time we see him.

Tiger Roll did not just save his own career when he was sent over fences, but he’s prolonged the career of his big-race rider too.

Keith Donoghue openly admits he would not be still be in the saddle were it not for his association with the son of Authorized. They have teamed up to win the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase for the last two years and, should they complete the hat-trick, it would be a fifth festival success for the ten-year-old who is getting more giddy with every day that goes by. His enthusiasm is infectious.

That enthusiasm was never more evident than on his return to action in the Boyne Hurdle at Navan last month. Yes, he was beaten. Yes, he was 14 and a half lengths behind stablemate Cracking Smart, but the way in which he eased into contention coming down to the second-last suggested every bit of ability was still there following a November scare in which he had a chip removed from a bone. This will tell is more. So much more.

This will tell us whether a third Grand National on the trot at Aintree next month is a realistic proposition. There would be no better way to go into that date with destiny than on the back of another comfortable Cheltenham win.

He is as short as 4-1 and no bigger than 11-2 to emulate Red Rum next month. That price could get even shorter if a 13th career victory is achieved at arguably his happiest hunting ground.

On the day we finally find out who is better between Chacun Pour Soi and Defi Du Seuil, and if Envoi Allen actually is the real deal, Tiger Roll could make the loudest roar of all. Best of luck, old boy. We are all rooting for you.
