What is a punter supposed to think when they read in these pages that Paul Nicholls is about to go on holiday to Antigua for ten days?

"He knows this is his quietest time of the main season, he has just reached 100 winners in a campaign for the 21st time and is heading out to relax in the sun, confident that he will not be missing much. Give his runners a swerve."

Or: "You don't get to be champion trainer 13 times without having excellent staff who can step up while you are away and a £100,000 race is as important in January as in November. Get on."
