It has been a decidedly up-and-down season for female milers. Early signs from the 1,000 Guineas, the Irish equivalent and the Coronation Stakes suggested they were a substandard crop. Then, following the Falmouth and Sussex, it looked for a brief moment as though they might be the story of this Flat season.

Looking down the field for the Sun Chariot Stakes, you might think things have come full circle. This is a race that consistently produces a winner in the high 110s on RPRs. The average in the last ten years is 117.6, with a range of less than 2lb either side. Yet the best performance on offer in this field is 116, which Snow Lantern produced when second in the Coronation and again when she won the Falmouth.
