All you need to know on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood
There is top-class action in Britain and Ireland today with the opening day of the Qatar Goodwood festival and the second day of Galway taking centre stage.
Stradivarius is the star on show on the Sussex Downs and bids for a third successive Goodwood Cup (3.35). The superstar stayer will be challenged by the likes of Gold Cup runner-up Dee Ex Bee, Melbourne Cup hero Cross Counter and Royal Ascot victor Dashing Willoughby.
The Group 2 Vintage Stakes (2.25) and Lennox Stakes (3.00) top a high quality card, with the former juvenile contest featuring Chesham Stakes scorer Pinatubo and the smart Mark Johnston-trained Visinari.
Galway's mixed card includes the Listed Colm Quinn BMW Novice Hurdle (5.20) with Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott and Joseph O'Brien all strongly represented.
Yarmouth and Beverley accompany Goodwood as the afternoon's Flat fixtures, while there are two jumps meetings at Worcester and Perth in the evening.

Final thought
Stradivarius's way of winning does not always inspire confidence but, just like his sire Sea The Stars, he always does enough. The John Gosden-trained stayer should be a sight to behold in defence of his Goodwood Cup and he has the man of the moment, Frankie Dettori, on board.
