Racing cancelled at Uttoxeter with surface 'unsustainable' after heavy rain

Uttoxeter's afternoon jumps fixture has been cancelled after 35mm of rain at the Staffordshire course in the last 24 hours.

Due to the heavy rainfall at the track, the racing surface is "unsustainable", with a further 10-15mm predicted around Sunday lunchtime.

The decision came after the going deteriorated overnight to soft ground and then further to soft, heavy in places, sparking 22 runners by 10.45am this morning, with 19 of them citing the changed going as the reason.

Clerk of the course Eloise Quayle: "We have had another 5mm of rain since 10am and it's still coming down. It's almost biblical and there is another 15mm in the forecast for the next two hours which is not helpful in the least.

"There is currently standing water in the home straight and back straight and the crossings on the course would not be passable for ambulances and other vehicles so we have little choice but to unfortunately abandon the meeting."

The Listed Pomfret Stakes (3.55) is the feature event of a good card at Pontefract, with the mile event attracting an intriguing line-up led by Khafoo Shememi for Sir Michael Stoute.

At Deauville there is plenty of British interest in the Prix Rothschild (2.50), with Laurens, Qabala, East, Beshaayir and Move Swiftly taking their chance in the mile Group 1.
