All the key information as Killarney's July festival gets under way
Killarney's five-day July festival, which gets under way on Monday evening, is the longest established of the County Kerry track’s three festival meetings, the first of them held in May and the third in August.
The racecourse, with its backdrop of mountains and lakes, is justifiably regarded as Ireland’s most scenic track. The first of Ireland’s recognised big summer festival fixtures and coming two weeks before the seven-day Galway festival, the meeting stages a mixture of Flat and jump racing.
A sharp, turning left-handed track with a circuit of approximately one and a quarter miles, the shortest distance Flat races are run over is a mile.
Over the past five years Declan McDonogh has been the leading Flat rider with 18 winners at a strike-rate of 29 per cent ahead of Colin Keane who has ridden 17 winners during the period at a strike-rate of 20 per cent.
McDonogh's only ride on Monday is Elleanthus for Joseph O'Brien in the 1m3f fillies' handicap (6.50) while Keane has two mounts – Stops A Nation for Willie Mullins (5.50) and Pythion for Ger Lyons (6.20).
Dermot Weld is the leading Flat trainer with 16 victories over the past five years at a strike-rate of 35 per cent.
Of the jump jockeys Davy Russell has the best record in recent years with nine winners at a strike-rate of 19 per cent.
Russell has two rides on Monday – Dakota Moirette for Gordon Elliott in the feature 2m1f handicap chase (7.20) and Dinons, also for Elliott, in the novice chase finale (8.50).
Willie Mullins and Joseph O’Brien are the two most successful jumps trainers over the past five seasons, with 24 and 15 wins respectively and strike rates of 26 per cent and 22 per cent.
Frankie Dettori will be the big attraction at the meeting and will ride at the track for the first time on Wednesday evening, when the Listed Cairn Rouge Stakes will be the main event on the card.
