All in the name as the equine Charlie Fellowes prepares for racecourse debut
Charlie Fellowes the trainer has become a familiar sight on racecourses, but on Tuesday at Wolverhampton he will be represented in equine form as the two-year-old named after him begins his career.
Fellowes hosts the Off The Bridle podcast with friend and fellow Newmarket trainer George Scott. Last year the pair decided to purchase a yearling at the sales for each other, with each horse to be named after the other trainer, so Scott trains Charlie Fellowes and vice-versa.
Charlie Fellowes, the horse, is a son of Swiss Spirit who starts off in the 5f Watch Royal Ascot On Sky Sports Racing Novice Auction Stakes (5.30) and Scott is hopeful of a good run.
He said: "He's a big, strong horse and goes nicely. I think he'll give a really solid account. I'm not saying he'll go and win first time out but I'll be disappointed if he doesn't run a race of some promise.
"He's straightforward, unlike the trainer, and hopefully he'll do his talking on the track, unlike the trainer!"
Shares are still available in the syndicate, which covers both horses, with the idea that members will be able to get a season's worth of enjoyment.
Scott added: "Charlie really likes the Zoffany gelding George Scott, he thinks he's one of his nicest two-year-olds.
"The idea was Charlie Fellowes would be able to run plenty over short distances and get the syndicate rolling and then the other horse would take up the baton over seven furlongs and be more of an exciting prospect for the end of the year and maybe into next year."
Naming horses after those within racing has been done before, with George Baker a multiple winner for the trainer of the same name.
To add further layers to the George Baker story, the horse was ridden on five occasions by the jockey George Baker, winning at Leicester in 2011 with Baker aboard, while one of the owners was Danny George Baker, known to his friends as George Baker.
