For devotees of the Flat, Sandown's Classic Trial card has long been a key staging post on the transition out of winter. Now, thanks to the significance of what Adayar achieved here and then in the 2021 Derby, we all have something more recent than the mesmeric Shergar to hang our hats on.
A fascinating cast of Epsom hopefuls has been assembled, but before we get to the titular main event, one of last summer's stars is set to add significant sparkle to the bet365 Mile .
Alcohol Free has taken owner-breeder Jeff Smith and trainer Andrew Balding on quite the ride over the last two campaigns, rounding off her juvenile season with Group 1 success in the Cheveley Park and then adding further top-level prizes with the Coronation Stakes and the Sussex Stakes at three.
