Poignant success for King Power Racing on emotional afternoon

On Remembrance weekend Donjuan Triumphant scored a poignant first victory for King Power Racing since the tragic death of Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.

A fortnight after his death in a helicopter crash, there was a minute's applause before racing at Doncaster on Saturday to remember the Leicester City chairman who was making a name for himself as an owner on the turf.

And Donjuan Triumphant, one of his standard bearers and most successful horses, sealed an emotional day as he carried the Thai businessman's colours to victory in the Listed Wentworth Stakes.

Andrew Balding was Srivaddhanaprabha's main trainer and was visibly emotional on welcoming Donjuan Triumphant back to the winner's enclosure.

"It puts horseracing and the triviality of other things in life into perspective," he said.

"It's a huge loss, not just to his family and the other families of people involved in the crash but to the whole King Power family. He was a tremendous guy, as has been well recorded and reported, and will be sadly missed."

James Doyle wore a black armband in memory of the owner and was delighted to get the 2-1 favourite up close home for a first win of the season.

Donjuan Triumphant had made the frame in Group 1 company on his previous two starts and the jockey said: "He's been solid all season. He definitely relishes this cut in the ground.

"He had to be very tough today because the action was all away from me and I was left exposed from a long way down. He had to go and fight for it and he showed a tremendous attitude."
