PJA cautions riders as Germany introduces strict whip penalties

German racing is set to introduce stringent new whip rules that will result in hefty fines and bans for riders who breach the limit of five strikes a race.

The move follows a fierce debate about use of the whip after the German Derby last month, in which the first- and second-placed riders incurred penalties for striking their mounts nine times.

Freddie Tylicki, who placed second, and winning jockey Dario Vargiu both lost 75 per cent of their prize-money share while Tylicki was hit with a four-day ban.
