Phoenix Of Spain ride triggers 21-day whip ban for Jamie Spencer

Jamie Spencer and fellow rider Paul Hanagan have received 21-day and ten-day bans respectively under the totting-up procedure for misuse of the whip.

Spencer was found to have used his whip excessively when riding Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes runner-up Phoenix Of Spain at Doncaster on October 27.

As it was a fifth offence of its type in the last six months, warranting a suspension of between two and six days on each occasion, the matter was referred to the BHA's independent disciplinary panel, which sat on Thursday.

Spencer is suspended on November 16, 17, 19-24, 27-30 and December 1 and 3. Seven days have been deferred until February 3.

His time on the sidelines was extended on Thursday evening, when he picked up a three-day ban for careless riding aboard Glendevon at Chelmsford, ruling him out of action between December 4 and 6.

Hanagan was referred to the panel after his ride on Inviolable Spirit in a handicap at Catterick on October 30, also his fifth offence in six months.

The two-time champion jockey is suspended on November 20-24, 27 and 28 while three days have been deferred until January 28.
