Peter Fahey out to earn first Grade 1 with Royal Bond contender Soviet Pimpernel
Peter Fahey has reported Royal Bond Novice Hurdle contender Soviet Pimpernel to be thriving as the trainer bids to break his Grade 1 duck at Fairyhouse with the rapidly improving four-year-old.
Soviet Pimpernel, narrowly denied in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham on just his second start over hurdles last month, has always been held in high regard by Fahey, who is looking forward to the challenge on December 1.
The trainer said: “Soviet Pimpernel will definitely go for the Royal Bond. We gave him an easy couple of weeks after Cheltenham and he seems to be in great form since.
"We were absolutely delighted with his run at Cheltenham, for a horse with such little experience – he's a tough horse. He surprised me a bit as we actually backed off him at home and he thrived massively for it.
Fahey added: “He's absolutely bouncing at the minute and we're looking forward to seeing how he gets on in the Royal Bond.”
Gypsy Island, one of the best bumper horses from last season and already a general 6-1 favourite for the mares' novice hurdle at Cheltenham, is expected to begin her campaign imminently, Fahey confirmed.
He added: “She’s in great form and is working well. She could be out in the next week to ten days.
“I haven't spoken to Frank [Berry] yet but there's a race for her at Punchestown and there's another at Fairyhouse so we'll see closer to the time. Hopefully we'll have her out before the end of the month.”
