Paul Mulrennan among five jockeys on the bill at charity boxing event
Frozen peas will be included in the shopping list at the Mulrennan household as jockey Paul and wife Adele are set to take part in a charity racing staff boxing night at York racecourse on Saturday.
Mulrennan, whose finest days in the saddle have come at York with back-to-back victories in the Nunthorpe on Mecca's Angel (2015 and 2016), is one of five professional jockeys on the bill at the William Hill-sponsored event organised by Ultra White Collar Boxing.
He is joined by Danny Cook, Robbie Fitzpatrick, Clifford Lee and Shane Gray, with the latter pair facing off in one of the 12 fights.
"It's for a very worthy cause and I've been training hard – it's been a good way to get fit for the start of the Flat season," said Mulrennan, who has been matched up with Ryan Timby from John Quinn's Malton stable.
"It will be quite nerve-wracking watching Adele, but she's trained hard and hopefully she'll enjoy it.
"I think Clifford and Shane will be the fight of the night as they are both very good boxers and probably have the most experience out of the jockeys. I'm proud of everyone doing it as a lot of the people are new to boxing."
Adele Mulrennan, a former jockey herself and raceday presenter who has appeared on ITV Racing, said: "It's the hardest thing I've ever done. When I got that first punch in the face in training, I realised what a challenge it would be."
Twenty-two of the participants work in racing and have undergone an eight-week training programme for the black-tie event.
Tickets are still available, with sales due to close on Friday at 3pm, and can be purchased via Racing Welfare's website, where details on how to sponsor any of the competitors can also be found.
