The Curragh played host to some of Pat Smullen's most treasured moments as a rider and now the track will ensure that the nine-time champion jockey is forever part of its history, honouring the much-missed figure by naming the jockeys' room at Irish Flat headquarters in his memory.

The legendary Offaly man, whose battle with pancreatic cancer served as an inspiration to people across the globe, died at the age of 43 in September and is set to be commemorated at the track he rode at 2,275 times – more than any other course.

There will also be a public display at the Kildare venue where the 12-time European Classic winner's career will be remembered.

Curragh chief executive Pat Keogh said: "Pat was such a huge part of the Curragh in every way. He loved this place and rode so many brilliant winners here for Dermot Weld, Moyglare Stud and the Aga Khan in particular.

"It was natural that the board of the Curragh wanted to honour him, consulting with his wife Frances and Pat's family on what they'd like to do."

He added: "We're all very familiar with Pat and his achievements, but we want to ensure that future generations coming to the Curragh see the Pat Smullen jockeys' room and understand what it means, remembering his legacy."

Few meetings have been as emotionally charged and dearly cherished as the Curragh's memorable fixture that hosted the Pat Smullen Champions Race For Cancer Trials Ireland in 2019, making this tribute a particularly fitting one.

Smullen's incredible fundraising effort generated over €2.5 million towards cancer research.

"It was a day that everyone in attendance will never forget," said Keogh. "The support behind his chosen charity was immense and the outpouring of goodwill towards him told you everything you need to know about the absolute legend and gentleman he was."
