Jockey Pat Cosgrave is facing a spell of between four and six weeks on the sidelines after breaking his leg in a fall at Newbury on Sunday.

The multiple Group 1-winning rider initially walked away from the fall, when he was unshipped from the Rae Guest-trained Capla Berry in the closing stages of a 7f handicap won by Karibana.

Later, after consultation with BHA medical officer Jerry Hill, the 38-year-old rider was advised to go to hospital for an x-ray where the fracture to his fibula was discovered.

Cosgrave, who has a productive association with Saeed bin Suroor, could be out until September and is hoping to be fully fit for the resumption of the UAE season in Dubai in October.

His agent Paul Clarke said: "It's strange as Pat originally walked away from his fall from Capla Berry on whom he was angling for a run when he clipped heels and went out the side door. It was nobody's fault and later he said he felt his leg was a bit sore and thought he should get it checked out.

"They found he had fractured his fibula which is part of the lower leg and he'll be out for a while although it's difficult to put an exact time frame on it. Looking at the fall it could have been much worse and hopefully he should be back well before the UAE resumption in October."

Cosgrave had enjoyed a productive winter in Dubai, with a Group 3 victory aboard Gm Hopkins, formerly trained by John Gosden, among his successes. He has ridden ten winners in Britain this year since racing resumed.
