On an otherwise ordinary Monday afternoon in Newmarket, a once-forgotten area of the town is bustling with activity.

Down Palace Street, which runs behind the High Street, the brand new National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art, resurrected from the remains of King Charles II's palace and racing stables, has officially opened its doors to the public for the first time and the response is enthusiastic.

Visitors were on the site during the Newmarket Open Weekend, but this is day one of the phased opening of the new attraction, which will be complete on October 24 when the full complement of features will be available.
