Our experts pick out the value in the big Cheltenham chase after 11 are declared

The Grade 3 Caspian Caviar Gold Cup (1.55), Saturday's feature race at Cheltenham, is always a competitive affair and this year's contest looks no different with Clan Des Obeaux heading the betting at 4-1.

With 11 declared for the 2m5f highlight, we asked our experts for their big-race opinions. Here's who they fancy . . .

Ballyalton

The ground had gone against Ballyalton in the BetVictor at this track last month but he still managed a gutsy fourth and with drying conditions in his favour he can be expected to improve considerably on that. Still relatively lightly raced for his age, he has an excellent record at Cheltenham and is only 3lb higher than when winning at the 2016 festival.

King's Odyssey

The best is still to come from King’s Odyssey, who loves soft ground, is 7lb lower than when a faller in this race 12 months ago – travelled strongly at the time – and enjoyed the perfect warm-up over an inadequate two miles at Carlisle last month.
Richard Birch

King's Odyssey was travelling nicely in this race 12 months ago when falling, just as the race was beginning to hot up. Going into this race off a mark of 140, he is now 7lb lower. The ground should be soft enough for him and this course-and-distance winner fulfils a lot of the criteria for this handicap.

Splash Of Ginge

The figures suggest Starchitect can reverse form with Splash Of Ginge and he has a 1lb swing for a neck defeat in the BetVictor but Nigel Twiston-Davies’ former Betfair Hurdle winner has gone up only to a mark of 139 for his win and he won a course and distance Grade 3 handicap off a mark of 145 back in 2015, so not only is he a vastly better price for the narrow turnaround but he has form in the book that suggests he is still very favourably treated.

Romain De Senam

He ran a fine race in the BetVictor when fifth and competes off 1lb lower on Saturday. Only five, he has not got that many miles on the clock so I would hope he could improve again and give Paul Nicholls back-to-back wins in the race after Frodon's success last year.
David Baxter

Romain De Senam leaps off the page as exactly the sort of horse Paul Nicholls finds a way to win these big Saturday prizes. Not beaten a million miles by Top Notch just over a year ago, this still-young chaser made an eyecatching move into contention in last month's BetVictor Gold Cup before finishing fifth. He should be capable of scoring off a mark of 145.
