The poet Edmund Spenser said opportunity is like a hag with a forelock, you must grab it before it passes.

Perhaps these were the words thundering through the ears of a leading northern rider when he was called up as a late replacement for stricken jockey David Probert at Chelmsford on Sunday.

Jumping in his car and making the four-hour journey down to Essex, the Group-winning rider arrived at the course to save the day only to then remember that in fact he was still serving a riding ban at the weekend.
