One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday
One trainer
Richard Hannon has had a quiet start to the year – with just five winners – but has a strong hand at Wolverhampton on Saturday.
Urban Icon was being aimed at the 2,000 Guineas at this point last season and, although he never quite reached those heights, he has a good opportunity of taking Listed honours. He features in the Bombardier-sponsored Lady Wulfruna Stakes (2.45), with Ryan Moore aboard.
Hannon has a live chance in the Bombardier Golden Beer Lincoln Trial (1.35) with Fox Power. He won a valuable handicap at Newcastle last season and has a strong chance on the form of his second here a month ago.
Other runners from the Hannon stable include Embour (2.10) and Ventura Bounty (3.55) while he is represented by two in the novice event (3.20). They are Lexington Storm and Haayem.
One jockey
Brian Hughes is back at Ayr as he looks to maintain his advantage over Richard Johnson in the jockeys' championship. He has a 24 per cent strike-rate at the track this season, which could be boosted on Saturday.
The best chance of his five rides looks to be the Nicky Richards-trained Marown, who is unbeaten in two starts and looks hard to beat in the Menabrea Novices' Hurdle (3.40). Hughes will sport the Trevor Hemmings silks again in the bumper when partnering impressive debut winner Castle Rushen (5.20).
Hughes also has decent chances on Island Mahee (2.30), The Con Man (3.05) and Top Billing (4.15).
One horse
It is no secret the Willie Mullins team think a lot of Energumene and he was not too big a price for races at the Cheltenham Festival at the start of the season. His big reputation is put to the test at Gowran Park (2.50).
He ran out an impressive winner at Thurles in January and looks to have a good opportunity of proving his class here. Perhaps this is a mere stepping stone to bigger races later in the season.
One race
It is Super Saturday in Dubai and, although there may not be any spectators due to coronavirus, the horses in action are worth looking forward to.
There are two Group 1 races on the card – the Jebel Hatta (2.20), featuring Barney Roy, and, on the dirt, round three of the Al Maktoum Challenge (2.55) – but perhaps the final race is the most intriguing.
Seven of the 11 runners in the Dubai City Of Gold (3.30) are trained in Britain, while the others feature from the UAE, Bahrain, Norway and Denmark. Heading the 1m4f contest is the Roger Varian-trained Defoe, who takes on familiar names Desert Encounter and First Nation in the Group 2. Pablo Escobarr is another interesting name to note.
