One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday
One trainer
Roger Varian will be hoping for a successful day at Newmarket as he prepares to send out red-hot favourites in the Spring Lodge Stakes and the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes.
Varian’s Sharjah Bridge, who performed well last season, including when finishing third to subsequent Group 2 winner Addeybb on debut at Haydock in June, remains open to improvement as he makes his first start as a four-year-old in opening Spring Lodge Stakes, while Defoe is odds-on for the Jockey Club Stakes.
Despite disappointing in the St Leger, Defoe has been largely progressive and arrives on the back of an impressive success on his return at Newbury last month. Connections will be hoping he continues his improvement and can make up into a genuine Group 1 horse.
One horse
Saxon Warrior heads to the 2,000 Guineas with fine credentials after winning the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster in October, and he has every chance of Classic success.
Donnacha O’Brien partnered the unbeaten three-year-old in the first of his three outings and is bidding to replicate the success of his brother Joseph by partnering a Classic winner as a teenager.
Along with market leader Gustav Klimt, Saxon Warrior represents record-breaking trainer Aidan O’Brien, who could also win the Kentucky Derby and 1,000 Guineas this weekend to complete an unprecedented treble.
One jockey
Godolphin rider James Doyle is in fantastic form after showcasing his talent at Wolverhampton on Wednesday, where he partnered four winners and two seconds from six rides, at one stage making his record ten wins and four seconds from his last 14 mounts.
The 30-year-old has taken his riding to another level since returning from a spell in Australia, but will need a slice of luck to make an impact in the 2,000 Guineas on board 100-1 chance Cardsharp.
Doyle should fare better in the day’s other televised races, however, and has fair claims with Tricorn in the opener, Encore D’or in the Palace House and Red Verdon in the Jockey Club. He rides Barton Mills (4.10), Old Persian (4.45) and Folk Tale (5.20) to complete a full book of rides.
One race
History could be made in the 2,000 Guineas with top jockeys William Buick and Jim Crowley both battling to land a first Newmarket Classic.
Buick will partner Godolphin's Masar, who emerged as a lively contender after storming to a nine-length victory in the Craven Stakes.
Crowley rides the Mark Johnston-trained Elarqam, who is a son of Guineas winners Frankel and Attraction and has been well backed in the lead-up to the race.
Adding further intrigue to the first Classic of the campaign are Gustav Klimt and Saxon Warrior, while Greenham Stakes one-two James Garfield and Expert Eye renew rivalry.
