One-time Derby hope Amedeo Modigliani could return at Leopardstown on Saturday

Amedeo Modigliani, a one-time leading fancy for this year's Derby, could make his belated return to the track at Leopardstown on Saturday as his name featured among 16 entries for the Listed Trigo Stakes.

An early-season setback deprived us of seeing the wide-margin Galway maiden winner this campaign, but the fact that trainer Aidan O'Brien has persevered suggests he could still have something left to offer this season.

Riven Light, who won back-to-back Colm Quinn BMW Miles at Galway in July before flopping in Seoul, also features among the entries, while Ken Condon is contemplating running stable star Success Days.

Condon said: "Success Days has a few options and if the rain arrived and it was soft at Leopardstown we might go there. He's best when allowed to dictate up front and I still think he possesses a lot of his old ability."

Trigo Stakes entries

So Perfect, a close third behind stablemate Fairyland in the Cheveley Park Stakes this month, is one of five entries for O'Brien in the Killavullan Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday. Other notable entries include the Joseph O’Brien-trained No Needs Never, who produced a smart effort to account for Old Glory in the Star Appeal Stakes at Dundalk this month.

Patrick Prendergast has entered last weekend’s Limerick maiden winner Could Be King, whose previous form includes a good fourth in the Group 2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh.

"I do think he has a future at this level and he did run well in the Futurity Stakes a couple of runs back, and that form looks very solid, but we'll just have to see how much Limerick took out of him," said Prendergast.

The Foran Equine Irish EBF Auction Final at Naas on Sunday is worth €120,000 and has unsurprisingly attracted a big entry, with 27 potential runners. Among them is recent Fairyhouse maiden winner Gustavus Weston, trained by Joe Murphy.

"He's working nicely and we've been very happy with him since he won at Fairyhouse last month,” said the trainer's son, Joe.

"We did consider the Killavullan Stakes but this race was always his target and it’s a very valuable pot so he'll head to Naas. He’s going to have to give weight all round but we're pleased with how he's going and hopefully he'll line up with a decent chance."

Also at Naas on Sunday is the Matchbook EBF Birdcatcher Premier Nursery and Darren Bunyan has his eyes on the prize for Chestnut Express.

Bunyan said: "Chestnut Express is in great form and has improved with every run. We're expecting a big run in the Birdcatcher."
