Racing yesterday united in paying tribute to Tom O'Ryan, a hugely popular figure in the sport who died following a short illness on Tuesday.

O'Ryan, who was 61, started out as a jockey before swapping riding for writing and becoming a successful journalist at the Racing Post.

He also turned his hand to broadcasting for Racing UK and earned praise for mentoring a host of young jockeys including subsequent dual champion jockey Paul Hanagan.
