No need for Murphy to grin and bear it with toothache as Waley-Cohen assists

The racing community came together to help champion jockey Oisin Murphy on Saturday after the rider referenced an ongoing struggle with toothache.

Murphy was forced to give up his final three rides at Yarmouth on Friday but the pain did not stop him from riding a double on Haydock's Saturday card, including in the Listed Achilles Stakes aboard King's Lynn.

Afterwards the rider revealed, despite his best efforts, he had not been able to secure a dentist appointment.

Who better to have on your side in a time of crisis than two Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning riders? No-one, it proved, as Paddy Brennan called upon Sam Waley-Cohen, who is the chief executive of Portman Dental, to help.

Waley-Cohen is no stranger to helping injured jockeys achieve picture-perfect smiles. As well as Brennan, he had previously helped weighing-room colleague Aidan Coleman in 2015. Even Hollie Doyle shared her own before-and-after picture after visiting a surgery in 2018.

Murphy doesn't have any rides on Sunday, so perhaps he will manage to arrange an appointment before Windsor's Monday card, where he is due to ride in all but one of the eight races.

The champion jockey has made a strong defence to his title and leads the way with 23 wins.
