Rachael Blackmore treats the limelight like kryptonite, but racing's latest superwoman lit up Horse Racing Ireland's annual awards at Dublin's Clayton Hotel on Tuesday when declaring that she is "the only person in the room who wants the jumps season to finish today".

An early termination of the campaign would see the superlative 29-year-old crowned champion jockey, and it might also be the catalyst that would see her fully embrace her position as a role model whose words can inspire as much as her deeds.

For now, though, she remains uncomfortable recognising herself as the heroine she is. "Next question!" she volleys modestly when MC Hugh Cahill puts it to her that she must derive great confidence from her newfound position of authority.
