Nathan Evans suffers broken pelvis in Ripon horror fall

Mick Easterby's apprentice Nathan Evans is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after breaking his pelvis in a nasty fall at Ripon on Saturday.

The 20-year-old was unseated from favourite Mount Rock when he clipped heels two furlongs out in the penultimate race, a mile handicap, won by Brilliant Vanguard.

Unfortunately, Mount Rock broke a leg and was fatally injured in the incident, coming down on top of Evans, who was taken to hospital in Harrogate, where x-rays revealed a fracture to his pelvis. He will know more after seeing a bone specialist on Monday.

Also caught up in the melee and brought down was Just Hiss, whose jockey Rachel Richardson was also taken to hospital as a precaution. She was later released and is set to ride at Thirsk on Monday.

Evans, who rode out his claim only last month, achieved his best tally to date with 49 winners in 2016 and is on 38 for the calendar year.

David Easterby, assistant and son of trainer Mick, said on Sunday: "Unfortunately Nathan has broken his pelvis in one place, I believe, and is to see a bone specialist at Harrogate Hospital on Monday to determine how long he'll be out.

"It was a nasty incident as the horse clipped heels before turning a somersault and coming down, when we think he broke his leg as he fell on top of Nathan."

Richardson's agent Alan Harrison reported on Sunday: "Rachel was very lucky to walk away from the incident.

"She went to hospital as a precaution as they thought she might have broken some ribs, but she was only winded and will be back riding at Thirsk tomorrow."
